It was a dramatic scene at Nkwọ Ụga Market in Uga Community, Aguata Local Government Area in Anambra State on Sunday as members of the community apprehended a suspected gunman terrorizing the area .
The thugs were found to have stormed the area in a bus and started shooting sporadically to disperse people.
The thugs allegedly snatched motorcycles from commercial motorcyclists in the market to improve their operation.
A source in the area said the youths gathered to confront the thugs, who immediately fled with the snatched motorbikes, leaving behind the bus driver who was accompanying them.
The bus driver was trapped as the youths immediately used iron barricades to block the road, then apprehended him as he got out of the vehicle and tried to escape into a nearby bush.
A video of the scene currently trending on social media showed the thug surrounded by villagers, one of his legs nearly severed with a machete, while bloodstains were all over his body.
It was learned that the mob nearly set him on fire immediately, but was advised to interrogate him rather than kill him, as he had already been beaten enough.
During questioning, the suspect said he was from a community in Nnewi South Local Government Area in Anambra State.
The community stripped the suspect with matching charms strapped around his waist and chest.
Reacting to the development, the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Christian Aburimé, commended the people for their support and cooperation in fighting crime in the state.
He however urged them to always hand over any captured suspects to law enforcement for proper investigation and prosecution, rather than resorting to jungle justice.
He also reassured the community that the government would not let up on its fight against crime and insecurity in Anambra.
Contacted for his reaction, state police spokesman DSP Ikenga Tochukwu promised to return.
