East Cobb GreenWise store closes at Sandy Plains MarketPlace

After opening its first GreenWise organic supermarket in Georgia with great fanfare last June, Publix is closing this location – at the Sandy Plains MarketPlace – this weekend.

The last business day will be Saturday for the East Cobb GreenWise store (3460 Sandy Plains Road).

A reader who visited the store on Monday said he had not seen an official notice until then, following a report last month in Tomorrow’s news today, an Atlanta retail, restaurant and hospitality information site.

Cobb East News sent a message to GreenWise, which provided the following response:

“It has been the privilege of GreenWise Market to serve the community of Marietta.

“As you can imagine, closing one of our stores is never an easy decision, and a number of factors are taken into account in that decision.

“Please be aware that all associates at this location will be offered an offer to move to nearby Publix stores if they wish. We sincerely apologize for any disappointment this may cause, but thank you for welcoming us to your community.

Cobb East News also reached out to Orkin and Associates, the owner of the mall, for comment.

The GreenWise store, with more than 25,000 square feet of space in a freestanding building, was the anchor of the Sandy Plains Marketplace, which opened in late 2019 on the site of the former campus of Mountain View Elementary School.

The opening of the store, first announced in 2018, has been delayed due to COVID-19.

This is the third GreenWise store to close recently, following the decisions will close two sites in South Carolina in August.

There are nine GreenWise stores still in operation: eight in Florida, the headquarters of Publix, and one near Birmingham, Alabama.

Publix recently opened its seventh supermarket in East Cobb in the East Cobb Crossing shopping center, next to Dick’s Sporting Goods on Roswell Road in Johnson Ferry Road.

The first Publix store in Georgia opened directly across from GreenWise at the Highland Plaza Shopping Center, on Sandy Plains and Shallowford Roads.
