Sale of Facebook Marketplace leads to theft of man at gunpoint; suspect charged

SAGINAW, MI – This summer, a sale of a motorcycle on the Facebook Marketplace took a turn for the worse when the potential buyer ended up carrying a gun to their head. Now, a man from Saginaw is facing a lifetime offense in connection with the incident.

On the evening of July 1, a 19-year-old man drove to an agreed meeting point on 15th Street near Wadsworth Road. He had already arranged to purchase an SSR Motorsports SR 125 pit bike from the Facebook Marketplace, prosecutors said.

While the buyer was on the street, he was approached by two men, one of whom carried a gun to his temple. The two men stole money and a handgun he had brought to the meeting from the buyer, prosecutors said.

Through an investigation, police identified 19-year-old Kevius L. Cooper as one of the suspects. The second suspect – the one who allegedly fired the gun at the victim – has still not been identified, police said.

Cooper and the victim did not know each other before the robbery, prosecutors said. The victim’s stolen weapon was also apparently not found, prosecutors added.

Authorities issued an arrest warrant for Cooper on August 13. Police arrested Cooper early in the morning of Thursday, September 16.

Later that morning, Saginaw County District Judge AT Frank arraigned Cooper on single counts of armed robbery and felony firearm. Armed robbery carries a sentence of life imprisonment, while a firearm conviction carries a mandatory minimum sentence of two years, to be served consecutively with any related stint.

Frank referred Cooper’s case to Pre-Trial Services for a bail recommendation. Until this recommendation is made, Cooper will be held in prison.

To prevent theft that can result from online person-to-person sales, Michigan State Police have been offering their post lobbies since 2015 as safe alternative meeting places. The halls of most post offices are open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on working days.

Cooper is scheduled to appear for a preliminary examination at 2 p.m. on September 30.
